Dr. Gerhard Schillinger is the head of the medical department at the AOK-Bundesverband, the federal association of the 11 local health funds in Germany. He is a medical doctor and neurosurgeon with specialist training at the University of Cologne and Hamm / Westphalia. His responsibilities include the assessment of benefit and risk of new diagnostics and treatments using the methods of evidence-based medicine.
Furthermore, the medical department initiates and supports projects to improve quality in medical care including the implementation of special structures for specific treatments. For example, AOK is involved in the National Network Genomic Medicine Lung Cancer (Optimisation of diagnostics and treatment in precision medicine in lung cancer) and in TRANSLATE NAMSE (optimization of diagnosis and treatment in orphan diseases)
