Hans Erik Johnsen, Clinical Professor in Hematology, Aalborg University

He was a pioneer implementing high dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation to treat cancer in Denmark. He was trained at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. His lifelong research has focused on clinical trials and studies of resistant disease to generate new biological classification systems, to predict therapeutic outcome.

During the last decade, the group at Aalborg University Hospital, supported by grants from EU and the Danish Research Council, has generated and validated new algorithm based diagnostics of predictive subtyping in malignant diseases.

The current activity is to implement this approach in patients with cancer recurrence and no standard therapy. In a five years prospective programme, he and his colleagues have initiated trials to validate the precision medicine concept. The idea is that clinical relapse reflects recurrent molecular mechanisms, of drug specific resistance, independent of the classical disease diagnosis.
